Mosu Aijala can you make a rpg about the Dark Queen of Mortholme? this games awesome

(+2)

This is such a cool game!

How many enddings are there?

The dev answered this below: there are 4 variants of the canon ending, + two alternate endings for players who do unexpected things (like somehow manage to defeat the hero endlessly, or refuse to fight him altogether)

This was so refreshing and enjoyable to play, every single time I would find myself waiting for the hero to enter through the door (a feeling I imagine, the queen shared). Its such a rewarding narrative to play through, the music and animations only add to its overwhelming beauty, the storytelling and symbolism in the animations and dialogue is absolutely phenomenal,  the setting is breathtaking. THANK YOU SO SO MUCH F OR MAKING THIS MASTERPIECE <333

SPOILERS IF YOU HAVENT PLAYED YET ( DO SO IMMEDIATELY)

I wish we could see the dark queen get to resurrect somehow, to be able to change in the manner she is told of by the hero, to possess the capacity for change that the hero employs throughout the story. Regardless, its a thoroughly rewarding thing to see the story unfold as it does with the queen dying near someone who she considered a worthy opponent, someone who changed her perspective in some way.

It's an unconventional relationship, but so endearing. To watch as the one you have come to know moves  onto where you cannot follow.

There's such an interesting dynamic to behold with a  static game boss doomed to repeat the same moves and see as their opponent (who's become their only company, a presence they now somewhat cherish) who is destined to get better to progress, something which the boss is fundamentally incapable of doing, the manner in which the queen's physicality changes in regard to the hero is s perfectly indicative of this, how the hero changes from just a simple challenger whom she snaps out of existence to someone who she cradles upon death waiting for their return.

There's really  nothing more to say other than to laud this game (anti-game) for being both subversive and conventional, for making me remember all the times I would learn every single move of a boss just to fail again and again  (the feeling of catharsis when I'd finally beat it ), thank you for making it. The only thing to dislike is that I couldn't play more, stay with these beautiful characters for longer, but as it goes that all good things must come to an end.

I'm looking forward to whatever you'll choose to create next, looking at this, I'm sure it'll be something just as perfect.

Bug:

I had just gotten through the dialogue of "I´m going to die, aren´t I" of the queen and actually managed to kill the hero while I was in the 2nd phase. My health bar disappeared and the hero didn´t end up laying on the ground and was instead chasing me. Although they were chasing me, the hero never tried to attack, and all my attempts to attack had no effect. When I eventually pressed space, the 2nd phase queen turned back into the normal one to touch the hero´s dead body and when the animation finished the hero wasn´t there and I was an Eldritch horror again. I was now permanently stuck like this, only able to aggressively attack the air.

PS: Genuinely such a good game, I absolutely loved it.

(1 edit) (+1)

This is such a beautiful and inspiring game.  I love the narrative, I love the different endings (I've gotten all 6)

Some are bitter, some are bittersweet.   All are beautiful.

The only thing I don't like about this game is that there isn't more of it.

I need more.  You're an amazing storyteller.  Please continue.

Spoilers ahead for readers who haven't played yet:

I really hoped for some kind of ending where the queen would change and be able to resurrect.  The "would you show me how to do it? how to rise from the ashes?" line got my hopes up for that.  I suppose the "rest easy, linger on in the mark you have left on me" ending, and the "Perhaps you've already changed... rest easy, you can let go" endings are as close as we get.

Unless you plan to make a sequel where she resurrects afterall, learning from the hero, and joins the hero on a quest to breathe new life into the world after they taught one another how to change and grow (please I would pay so much money for this).

"an unconventional relationship and the capacity for change." the only change i see is with the hero. wish there would be a way for the dark queen to change, i have to say that i feel like some of the attacks seem like they should hit sometimes but he just doesn't get hit, but another thing is that i loved all the dialogue it brought the game to life,  anyhow love the game great story would love a next part to this like some kind of revival of the dark queen but not as though she come straight back to her throne an evolution of some kind a "change".

(+6)

Yes. The capacity for change studied through the eyes of someone utterly incapable of it.

Fighting like hell and doing nothing. Is there truly the end one must desire? Or our death is simply prescript...

Funnily enough, I got stuck in a loop where the hero kept dying immediately without advancing the dialogue. Guess I'll have to watch the ending on youtube.

Really enjoyed the (anti-)game and aesthetics, though.

(+2)

I love the concept of the game but it feels too dragged on to enjoy the ending as it gets annoying realizing you actually dont have any control over the character. so you basically just hit random buttons to let the story progress.
I know its an anti-game but it lacks anything to be invested in it. feels more like an interactive story imo rather than an anti-game.
Overall I enjoyed it with the banter between the hero and the queen. I wish there was more to it than just linear dialogue though. like choosing from more dialogue options for different endings when she dies. or easter eggs.

definitely one of my favorite games to add to my collection. I enjoy villian/monster pov games ❤ thank you for this gem!

There are literally 6 endings I have gotten through a combination of different dialogue choices and different fighting styles.

I've found more than what the "All endings" videos on youtube show.

You can actually beat the hero and make him give up, you can refuse to fight the hero completely, you can be unyielding and cruel in your dialogue then soften your tone at the end, you can be soft in your dialogue at first and then decide not to yield in the end.

You can *almost* make the hero give up, and then let him defeat you.

They all give different endings and there are different variations of the "yes" and "no" options at the end depending on how you played.

[EDIT] I had only gotten 5, but I got the 6th now and the dev confirmed that's all there is.

I think it's a lot more of a gem than you realize. There are six endings, I think. I wasn’t even able to get all of them yet. I’ve seen many, many dialogue options in only three runs, including variations in other lines of dialogue I´ve seen already. I'm not sure if those count as Easter eggs. There might be Easter eggs that I just haven’t seen with all the options because of how many are available. If it feels to you like the game is "dragged on," I´d recommend working on your attention span, as you would be missing out on a genuinely great game.  It´s honestly a miracle that this game is free at all, so please take advantage of that.

(+1)

good game, hope the devs add an ending where the hero becomes the dark queens subordinate,  or just more endings in general, its a very good short game either way, 10/10

(+4)

I just wish we could really show the hero that he was right, that the queen can change and have her relent without dying, have her move on together with him

New Softlock Ending: Eternal Darkness Party
https://gyazo.com/77dbfdccdb678f508a8e56dab4c033c7
When you kill him just as he lands the last blow needed to make you go into your second form. It caused a bug that had the following effects

1: The Queen flashed in and out of the darkness form
2: During this the Warrior Revived and then Died until he stayed dead
3: After he died the Queen automatically hugged him on death (the hugs being triggered by giving more sympathetic responses this playthrough)
4: When she hugburns him she floats with him in a hug until hes burned
5: She stands up in her base form but can now fly around endlessly similarly to her second phase.
6: Pressing any attack during this turns you back into the 2nd Phase Queen.
7: ?????
8: Bask in the fact that you were right and he was wrong.

(+2)

Incredible. Look at her go

(+1)

So that's what she does when she's not painting her mace with the blood of would be heroes or sitting menacingly on the immutable throne.

She just has a straight up darkness rave all by her lonesome.

(+2)

This game was fun as fuck, I especially enoyed allowing the little guy to take me down to phase two a couple times so I can defeat him when he has 3 not 2 lives. Giving him hope so I can crush him even harder.  Also if allow him to get him you to phase 2 once then keep beating him up without allowing him to take u to phase 2 he keeps repeating the "upsy my bad I just had skill issue" line until you allow him to take you to phase 2 again then you can eventually crush him.

(+1)

So gooooood. Loved the dialogues

(+10)

I've played through the anti-game a number of times and...

First off, I love the way the characters and their change is built up.

The hero in their relentless improvement, and the queen in her fondness of the hero. So many aspects come together to really make me feel this game... The reflection in the floor, the sound. The way the hero's sword clatters to the ground as the queen pulls their body to her heart. The battle theme abruptly ending when the hero is easily slain.

Second, I feel like some aspects could still work better. Sometimes, the hits from the 2nd form claw attacks just don't register and it's brought me down when it felt like staying alive mattered the most... But more about this.

Third, related. I think the plot hasn't been entirely honest with me. The whole premise, the whole message the hero had been bringing is - "there is hope as long as you keep trying". And yet... I don't think this story leaves me any hope. Any hope of surviving and changing. Any hope of walking out through that door and seeing that gatehouse, that waterfall which used to hide that fancy sword. Any hope of the hero deciding not to strike the queen down after all that she's shared and all the ways in which she may have changed.

I love the story. I love the characters. I love the endings that exist. I just feel cheated that there isn't another way. That a story about change cannot be changed. That the story about hope is hopeless.

(+2)

I like the way you are going with this... 🤔

(+3)

I feel you there. It's a story about change through the eyes of someone who cannot change; a story about hope from the point of someone who doesn't understand it. Importance highlighted through lack, if you will.

If it helps... I myself consider there to be meaning in the game ending the moment of the Queen's death. The game tells the story of the Dark Queen of Mortholme, but beyond its end the title is no more. I like to think that the person bound to that role is released from it.

(1 edit)

Thank you.

Though I think "someone who cannot change" is a little inaccurate towards the Queen here. From the way I perceived the story - she moreso doesn't believe in change nor in having capacity or need to do so - but she does evolve as in that view as the confrontation escalates. Or, well. Has the capacity to do so. That part is left up to the player.

I agree entirely that the game's ending is well placed. That no matter how this story would end, it would end with the Dark Queen of Mortholme being no more.

I just wish there was room for a little hope before that final screen. Just a little bit of that purple flame of rebirth or whatnot, if the circumstances were right.

I actually think the death animation for the Queen is phenomenal, in how she appears to be absorbed into the Hero's sword. I see that as a sign - that the Hero will forever carry the imprint she left in their memory. But it is always the same - whether the hero's last words are just to put her to rest, or to acknowledge her change. I think it works the best in the ending where the Queen gives the Hero her blessing, though, beyond any other.

(+1)

Thoughtful meta, thank you!

I think the motivation behind writing little confirmation of whether the Queen will be able to resurrect or not after the game ends is because all the dialogue happens within the reign of the Dark Queen. Before it's over, before the status quo ceases to be, it's still bound to treat her capacity to change as an unknown.

You're absolutely right that the Queen's fate is left to the player; to their understanding of who or what she is and how metaphorical death is in this world, to their beliefs about change. It's a fair point that this uncertainty has potential to come off as a tad grim, perhaps moreso than I expected it would. Still, that freedom has resulted in a wide variety of interpretations, which has been fascinating for me and hopefully valuable for the players.

just spam 3 at the left corner and hit on the right time with 1 and he walks in his death each time .... no more story follow up at this point

An absolute masterpiece in story telling! thanks for this amazing experience!!!!

(+4)

Love the story and how gameplay shows it. The mooves are predicrtable and slow, while hero is fast and nimble. Hero can become more, while you are eternally the same. The saddnes of not growing. When you are at the top of the mountain you cant go up, but the queen did't have the privlage of going on a journy up, she was born like this. I wish there was a little chance of the queen's mace dropping and hero using it, so at least he can see the hero grow maybe even more and be "upgraded" by the hero if he chooses so.

(-8)

a great storyline, but the gameplay just sucks IMO, all moves are slow and clunky, they don't hit even though it clearly should. and it doesn't turn when you want you.

(+1)

i think being slow and clunky is kind of the experience when you´re the boss instead of the hero.

(+7)

beautiful game, very well made, but being scripted to die, landing hits but they dont count? kinda ruins it for me personally
was hoping you could keep playing till you lost , that he became the challange rather than you
but eventually its just the last battle, one more time, and he cant die

aaaand as i write this i see a bug fix
turns out it wasnt scripted, its a bug that refuses to go away...poetic

I tried to play it, but it's stuck on a black loading screen 🤔

Anyone else having this problem?

(+1)

The way we humans touch on the ephemerality of eternality is astonishing.

This game does that extraordinarily well.

I have a question (not trying to be mean). Did you search that word up on google?

I did search "ephemerality" since I wasn't sure if it existed, yes.

(1 edit)

It wont let me pay you for it with my card maybe cause im australian idk. But in any case this game is amazing and Ive greatly enjoyed it.

aww, I was hopin for somethin more than just the hero always wins...

There are three endings you know.

I did not, only just started playin, thanks for the heads up ^^

(+1)

I just finished it, the game has very intriguing details with dialogue in it. Enjoy finding them.

There are at least 5

it has 6 endings now

(+3)

We need romance ending please ( •̀ ω •́ )y

(+7)

I hope to see a 50000 word long romance fanfic with extensive smut and fluff.

I actively avoid smut fanfic but even I would read this just to get more of these characters.

This is a good game

yessssss

That was to most terrifying horror game I've played

(+1)

I worked hard, I won... and yet all I felt was lonely.

10/10 - great real life simulator.

(+1)

What an awesome game. I don't usually comment but this one just made me feel so many emotions. Character development was top notch, actually made me feel like I was the queen trapped in my never-ending cycle of killing the hero and trapped in my castle for an eternity. 11/10.

(+1)

Imagine if this were an animated short film...

(1 edit) (+1)

Hey, I'm Loving the gameplay & characters, always thought a game like this could be quite interesting, nice to see it done so well

I did notice a bug where one of the "hurt boxes" doesn't go away sometimes (possibly while the hero is dying?) so the next fight there is a area around the queen that just does damage.

It also seems to ignore the third health level & doesn't show it properly, instead removing the second heart & then first heart after it hits the hero again killing them while leaving the third heart untouched?

it showed up when playing on desktop & laptop (both running windows). I'm not sure what causes it... but the way I play seems to set it off? (twice in my 4... maybe 5? runs)

Sorry if that description isn't very helpful for recreating/finding the error

Thank you for the great little game & I wish you good luck hunting any bugs down

(+1)

Thanks for the bug report, it's appreeciated! I'll look into the sticky hurt boxes. Do you mean that it's only the "stuck" hurt box that causes weird things to happen with the Hero health display, or does the latter happen in other situations too?

(4 edits)

I only saw it with the stuck hurt box & It happened both times? So I assume they are linked

Could we get an Android version?

(+1)

its a 20 min game...

On vacation rn, don't have a PC to play it.

what an amazing game, so inspiring

There's this super loud crackling that starts around 5 minutes in that keeps getting worse - I thought it was surround sound first but after turning it off it was still there ;; Still a super fun experience though!

(+6)

this, too, is yuri

(+1)

This too is yuri.

I might need some help here as when I try to download the . exe it fails every time.  Haven't found a solution through google yet.

Update: After trying to download it 20+ times it has finally allowed itself to fully download.  Now to have fun playing this interesting concept of a game.

Great game, something truly new.

(+2)

I'll be thinking about these two for much longer than the 20 minutes it took to experience their stories. Wonderfully written and beautiful artwork ^^

Honestly love it and hope it gets an update of some sort, maybe he can free us,  or maybe even more boss forms :)

(if that's in the developer's interest)

honestly thats what i was hoping would happen and idk if you beat him one more time when you are being nice to him and then you get the ending where they both live. i am not good enough to get there though because when he says one more try it like super hard and i managed to get him to 1 heart but he killed me with bow unfortunely.
